Terms of service
The agreement between you and us when you use Maxwell Books.
Last updated Oct 26, 2026
The agreement
These terms are an agreement between you and Parker Hudson, a sole proprietor ("we"), which runs Maxwell Books. By creating an account you agree to them and to our privacy policy. If you use Maxwell Books for a business, you agree on its behalf and confirm you're allowed to.
Who can use it
You must be 18 or older and use Maxwell Books for a business in Canada. During testing, accounts are by invitation only.
What Maxwell Books does, and doesn't
Maxwell Books helps you keep your books: it reads your statements and receipts, suggests categories and GST, and makes reports. It's a tool, not an accountant.
- Suggestions, including AI suggestions, can be wrong. You check and confirm them, and you're responsible for your books and your tax filings.
- We don't give accounting, tax or legal advice, and we don't file anything with the Canada Revenue Agency for you.
- Your accountant, if you invite one, is responsible for their own advice and work.
Your account
Keep your password private, and turn on two-step sign-in. Tell us right away if you think someone else has used your account. You're responsible for what happens in your account, including what an accountant you invite does there.
Your data
Your books are yours. You give us permission to store and process them only to provide the service, as our privacy policy describes. You can download them at any time, and close your account at any time.
Only upload information you have the right to use. Don't upload anyone else's personal information unless it's part of your own business records.
Fair use
- Don't try to get into anyone else's account or books, or around our security or limits.
- Don't use Maxwell Books for anything illegal, or upload anything harmful.
- Don't overload the service. We limit how often uploads and sign-ins can happen, and how much document reading each business can use in a day.
We can suspend an account that breaks these rules. Unless it's urgent or the law prevents it, we'll tell you why first and give you a chance to download your books.
Price and billing
Maxwell Books is free while we test it with invited businesses. Before billing starts, we'll tell you the price at least 30 days ahead, and you'll only be charged if you choose to subscribe.
When billing starts:
- The price you see before you subscribe is the full price, with GST shown. There are no hidden fees.
- Subscriptions renew monthly until you cancel. We'll email you before each renewal with the date and amount.
- You can cancel any time in Settings, in no more steps than it took to subscribe. You keep access until the end of the month you paid for.
- Refunds are described in our refund policy.
- We'll tell you at least 30 days before any price change, and you can cancel before it applies.
The service
We work to keep Maxwell Books running and your data safe, but we can't promise it will always be available or free of errors. Keep your own download of your books.
We may change or improve features. If we ever stop offering Maxwell Books, we'll give you at least 60 days' notice to download your books.
Responsibility
[Bananastand: limitation of liability, warranty disclaimer and indemnity wording, consistent with Alberta's Consumer Protection Act where it applies.]
Ending the agreement
You can close your account at any time from Profile. We can end this agreement with 30 days' notice, or right away if you seriously break these terms.
Changes and law
If we change these terms in a way that matters, we'll tell you before the change takes effect and ask you to agree again. The laws of Alberta and Canada apply.
